With the injury to Phil Prendergast in the Celtic Timaru pre season game - Dan Dwyer was announced as the Senior Captain for the season with Jason Feutz being named Vice Captain for the upcoming 2009 season. The Darryl Phillips Motor Company senior squad has been named Tony Purpura (America), Tom Jones, Jock Cockburn, Rob Rein, Nathan Dowler, Jamie Whitcombe, Lyndon Kees, Dan Dwyer, Rob Laing, Russell Kelly, Tim Reid, Sam Van Zehan (Canada), Nic McCain, Tom Macfarlane, Danny Hurley, Simon Scott, Mark Summerfield, James Buchanan, Phil Stephens, Des Kruger, Johan Marlow, Kent Summerfield, Ryan Ford, Phil Prendergast, Jaz Channa (Canada), Jason Morrison, Jason Feutz. The seniors, senior b's and colts all played Southern last weekend at Celtic. The seniors lost 41/13 after leading 13/8 at halftime. The 1st half was hard fought with Danny Hurley scoring Celtic's sole try with the rest of our points coming from the boot of Phil Stephens. This week they travel to Darfield so good luck. The Midlands Seeds Killer b's had their 1st win for the season over Southern as well with a 12-5 score line, after leading 7/5 at halftime. With a try to Jaz in 1st half, followed by a Matt Hurley conversion and then the winning try to Tiny in 2nd half we managed to keep hold of The Vic Trophy. Player of Day went to Tim Reid, with strong games coming from both locks Shane Muckle and Richard Yeoman with Brad Deuart also playing well in the unfamiliar position of halfback. This week they travel to Rakaia for a 1pm kickoff. The Colts also lost to Southern 16/5 after some very good, hard rugby was played by both teams. This week they travel with the seniors to Darfield for a 1pm kick off. Having these 3 teams play at home made for a large crowd of spectators which is always good to see at local clubs. This was followed by a ANZAC Day function put on by the netball girls which produced a good crowd, it was good to see a number of people dress up in ANZAC theme and a good night was had by all, thanks Linda for your contribution. JAB starts this weekend with another good number of teams for us with 2 U'8 teams, 3 U'9s, 1 U'11, 1 U'13 and 1 U'14 1/2 team . Anyone still wanting to play contact Paddy Strange on 308 0023 .For the 1st time Ashburton Celtic won the annual Pompellier Tournament that was held here 2weeks ago .It was good to see a huge amount of support for this from both parents and spectators. Also this year in association with the Ashburton Boxing Club we are running a "fight night" to be held at the clubrooms on 6 June. A boxing ring will be erected inside the clubrooms, and will include 8 fights with registered boxers that will help them earn point/rankings towards the national boxing tournament. So keep this night free for a night of entertainment. Remember to check our website, ashburtonceltic.co.nz for any updates or news. Any enquiries about the above, contact Stefan Brook on 307 1072. Next committee meeting is on 18th May, 7:30pm. |
